Dan the Automator is undoubtedly the man when it comes to conceptual Hip Hop. Once again, he has dug deep to find some of the best rhyme spitters to work their skills on his most recent project, Dan the Automator presents 2K7, a Hip Hop adventure into all aspects and experiences of Basketball.
2K7 reads like a 2006 who’s who of Hip Hop. Lupe Fiasco & Evidence shine their charisma on the elevating ‘ Catch me’, Slim Thug lays it down on ‘I love this game’ and the recently reunited Tribe Called Quest are at once again at their finest on ‘Lyrics to go’. Fabolous, Ghostface, Mos Def, Chali Tuna, Dilated Peoples, The Heiroglyphics, E-40 and Aceyalone can also be found bouncin’ on this Basketball Hip Hop fest.
In signature style, Dan weaves each of these MC’s strong and vibrant talent into a Hip Hop heavy blend of beats, vastly unlike the sounds from his previous ventures as part of Handsome Boy Modelling School, and his more ambient project, Lovage, and crazy mixtape, Wanna Buy a Monkey?
This time around it is clear that Dan means Hip Hop, period. If anyone was lucky enough to be at Good Vibrations 2005 and caught Dan’s set there…. If you loved that, then you should definitely check this one out!
Each track on this album is a faithful declaration of each MC’s love of Basketball culture, a sport that has been supported by Hip Hop heads for decades.
You can’t miss the hilariously clever intro, that combines the sounds of pre-game anticipation on the court, laced with the sampled sounds of Basketball shoes squeaking up the court.
This is a fantastic Hip Hop album, sure to satisfy those who just love bangin’ Hip Hop, to those heads who really love their Basketball, to those who just love the surprises that Dan the Automator always delivers.
